The LEAF Council Expands Art and Poetry Contest’s Reach
The LEAF Council on Alcoholism and Addiction in Otsego County held its 6th Annual Art and Poetry contest during the spring and summer of 2016 with the theme, “True Colors.” This year, the art and poetry went on tour, giving 140 youth and adults the opportunity to share their work in three separate venues. One of the venues was Cooperstown’s famed Fenimore Art Museum, a true testament to the quality and talent of those who participate. It is a very special recognition to be able to show amidst the work of famed artists such as Ansel Adams and Toulouse-Lautrec.
Artists and poets of all ages, many of whom were either in recovery or had family members with addiction, shared their vision for living a “true color” life free from the impact of alcohol and other drugs. Poets read their work in an open mic format, while artists were able to interact with people in galleries. More than 350 people participated in opening or closing events at the three venues.
With the partnership of a local business, Five Star Subaru, LEAF continues to put together the Art and Poetry Show on an annual basis. The entire tour is alcohol free, and is as part of LEAF’s ongoing work to change the environment and provide opportunities, skills and recognition for community members.
